Working for a magazine was my lifelong dream. I’d seen countless rom-coms portraying it as being a glamorous profession—one where editors are dressed to the nines, plugging away from nine-to-five in floor-to-ceiling glass skyscrapers, while getting to jet set around the globe—and knew it was my calling. Though my dream has essentially come true, the behind-the-scenes reality of magazine publishing is much different than The Devil Wears Prada depicts. But, considering my motto is “I’d rather be busy than bored,” I love every minute of it. Plus, the people I work with are like family, the glossy print product we produce every month is rewarding, and the perks are a definite plus. Speaking of the latter, earlier this summer I was invited to attend a fund-raiser for Placer Land Trust called The ART of Locally Grown, a hyper-local fivecourse dinner paired with Placer County beer and wine where we got to meet the people behind the pours (Andy Klein from The Monk’s Cellar and Kevin Stevenson from Casque Wines). Hosted by Fork N’ Road Productions and held under a balmy, star-filled sky at Westfield Galleria at Roseville, it was one of those magical nights where I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. Not only did I leave feeling full, buzzed (don’t worry, Uber took me home) and grateful for a job that allows me to experience events like this, but with a new appreciation for our local craft beer and wine scene. The soiree also served as inspiration for this month’s feature, “A Local Beer & Wine Lover’s Guide to the Region,” where you can get a taste for everything that’s literally brewing in our backyard. Flip to page 35 to meet a handful of local brewmasters and winemakers making a splash on the scene, tour tasting rooms that offer amenities like live music, no tasting fees and games galore, discover restaurants that offer beer and wine flights, and take a bite out of our favorite boozefilled dishes. Whether you prefer pints or Pinot, the multi-page spread promises to please. Though (according to chemistry) alcohol is a solution, it’s not always the answer—especially when it comes to marital bliss—so we reached out to local marriage and family therapist Joe Borders to give us answers to “5 Relationship Questions” in Health & Wellness. We hope his advice brings clarity, and paves the way for sparks to fly once again. As always, we have plenty more in store too—from “Back-to-School Essentials” in Swag, to a roundup of local authors in The 10 Spot, and the recipe to make Coconut Unfried Shrimp in Taste—so sit back, relax and enjoy these hot August nights with Style by your side (glass of craft beer or wine optional). ranite Bay resident Christina Richter will never forget the day a tornado changed the course of her life forever. She was living

with her family in a small town in southwestern Ohio, and when the twister hit, they were forced to crouch in a corner of their home’s basement to survive. When they emerged, their home was gone—along with much of the town. Soon after, they moved to a different state, but the event left an indelible mark on Richter’s life. “It taught me that material things don’t matter...life is about relationships: family and friends.” An avid history buff, Richter became immersed in Roseville’s rich past after moving to California 20 years ago. She’s now the president of the Roseville Historical Society, in addition to sitting on the Historical Advisory

Board of Placer County and being a member of the California Historical Society and Sacramento Historical Society. What’s more, she’s the author of Walk with Me, I Want to Tell You Something: The Story of the Roseville Fiddyment Family and is passionate about educating others on Roseville’s proud pioneering history—much of which is on display at the newly renovated Carnegie Library Museum on Lincoln Street. Richter is also a member of the Philanthropic Women’s Organization, a group that provides educational scholarships for women. For Richter, the key to building a community is education, especially when it comes to increasing awareness of how the past shapes who we are today. “Roseville began as a small, tight-knit community,” she shares. “We were successful because we cared about and supported each other.” —Amber Foster

I’m retired, and one of my hobbies is showing my champion Alaskan Malamute. I’m athletic for my age and exercise daily, but I didn’t have confidence I’d have stability running around in a show ring. I knew I wanted my knee repaired to restore my strength, flexibility and range of motion so I can keep doing what I love. He completed his medical degree at Cornell University Medical School and then the Orthopaedic Residency Program at Harvard. He is one of the few fellowship-trained hip arthroscopists in Northern California. Q

I sprained my knee a while ago. It’s healed, but now I don’t trust it to be stable. How do I get it back to feeling normal?

A

If you sprained your knee, felt a pop, and now your knee gives out, you likely have an ACL tear. It’s not normal to have your knee buckle and feel unstable even after the pain goes away. First, see your primary care doctor. After an exam, your doctor may order an x-ray or an MRI to determine the extent of your injury and if you’ll need a referral for physical therapy or to an orthopedist for surgery. You can live with a torn ligament if you’re not experiencing pain, but you may have to give up certain activities that stress your knee. Consider reconstructive ACL surgery if your knee gives out during routine activity, if you’re an athlete and want to continue with your sport, or if you want to prevent further injury and avoid arthritis. Woofstock If you’re looking to spend some quality time with your pooch or are thinking of adopting a new best friend, head to Woofstock on August 27 at Johnson-Springview Park. There will be an array of canine activities happening throughout the day, including a ”groovy costume parade, an entertaining wiener dog race, a 5K grateful dog rescue run, a morning pawcake breakfast and live music,” explains City of Rocklin Marketing and Development Specialist Monica Nitz. In addition to the multitude of activities, there will also be over 35 rescue groups and non-profit shelters with dogs looking for new homes. “So many of our shelters are overloaded with dogs that need loving homes, and we want to give those rescue groups and shelters an opportunity to help the pooches find a forever home,” says Nitz. This will be the 11th year of the event, and attendance, dog-themed vendors and dog rescues have consistently increased; so join locals in celebrating man’s best friend—you might even end up with a new fur addition to your family!—Emily Peter

rowing up in Loomis, woodworker Lee Hinge spent hours exploring the scenery of Folsom Lake and the surrounding forests —natural beauty that’s now ref lected in the pieces he handcrafts for his business, Shorebreak Designs. Using reclaimed and unique varieties of wood (including exotic offerings from Africa and South

the arts America)—often left in their natural state—he creates one-of-a-kind items that are both practical and pretty. Whether you need a cutting board, pizza peel, feeder for Fido, or a custom design project, Hinge is up for the challenge. HLB: WHEN DID YOU LEARN WOODWORKING? LH: I took woodshop in high school, but that was 20 years ago, so most of what I do is self-taught. [Since] I’m a visual person, if I can see it in my head, I can usually build it. I started by making a cutting board for a friend, [which ended up being] a hit. She showed it off and someone else wanted one, then someone else, and so on. After, I started reclaiming exotic woods for butcher blocks, pizza peels, cheese boards, etc. HLB: DO YOU MAKE CUSTOM PIECES? LH: Custom creations are my favorite. Everyone usually has an idea [of what they want] in their head or has seen a picture of something, so I take that, add onto it and make it come to life. HLB: HOW DO YOU TRANSLATE NATURE THROUGH YOUR DESIGNS? LH: Nature is fascinating and beautiful. To help show that off, I don’t use any stains or dyes—I let the natural color and grain patterns of the wood speak for itself. My favorite part is putting a natural oil on the wood and watching it come to life. A lot of my inspiration comes from going out [in nature] and searching for unique woods and grain patterns. HLB: DO YOU HAVE ANY SECRET SPOTS FOR FINDING RECLAIMED WOOD? LH: I don’t have a favorite spot, but I was once told if you find a unique piece of wood, buy it—even if you don’t have a project in mind—so I have tons of wood I save for special projects. I’ll walk past it 100 times, then suddenly I’ll look at it and have a great idea of what to make. HLB: WHAT MAKES A BUSINESS SUCCESSFUL? LH: A satisfied and happy customer is what it’s all about. I’ve always tried to add extra details and accents to “wow” the customer, which is also my advice to anyone starting out: Pay attention to all the little details; it all counts. HLB: WHAT’S IN STORE FOR THE FUTURE? LH: I’d really like to start some type of school or offer classes where people can work with their hands and have fun with loud music. I DO SO MUCH FOR MY PARTNER AND THEY DON’T SEEM TO APPRECIATE IT. WHY? You might have differing love languages. We all express love and perceive it from others in different ways. The five main love languages are gift giving, words of affirmation, acts of service, physical touch, and quality time. Take a moment with your partner to discover each other’s love language; you might be bringing her flowers when she really wants you to hold her hand and hug her more often. IS THIS THING MY PARTNER DOES NORMAL? In a relationship, it’s less important if something is “normal” and more important to discuss how you feel about it and if it’s within the rules of the relationship. It’s very common for people

to get upset at their partners thinking, “if they loved me, they wouldn’t do that.” We assume there’s a concrete idea of a “good relationship” that we all share; reality is, every relationship is different, and you need to talk about what’s off-limits for you and build empathy for each other in these regards. SOMETIMES I GET ANGRY AND SAY THINGS I EVENTUALLY REGRET. HOW CAN I CHANGE? Anger can come from all kinds of places, but the most common case I see is when a person doesn’t feel heard and understood. One of the most important things in any relationship is your ability to be vulnerable with your partner, which, for some people, can feel scary or unsafe. Sometimes it

seems easier to blame and yell at someone rather than saying you’re feeling hurt and disconnected. Work on finding coping skills and expressing your emotions in a constructive way. SOMETHING BAD HAPPENED BETWEEN US. HOW DO WE GET OVER IT? Be open and patient with each other. It’s important for the person who was hurt to be able to express their emotions, and for the other person to hear and empathize with what the other is saying. Trouble happens when one person doesn’t feel heard and the other feels

irritated, gets impatient, and thinks “why can’t we just move on?” It’s hard, but in cases like this it often becomes one person’s job to try to be vulnerable again, and for the other person to be patient with being distrusted. Both are painful experiences and push on our inner need to fight or flight. SHOULD WE SEPARATE? There’s no universal answer to this, but barring the presence of abuse, I generally believe that all relationships can be saved. The question is: Do you really want to save it? Oftentimes we become hurt and distant in relationships and feel like our partner is a completely different person from the one we fell in love with. You can reconnect and repair; it’s all about being open and expressing your emotions in a healthy way.

his month, 2 ,000 area students will head back to sc hool spor ting new backpacks stuf fed with

supplies. The packs are being distributed by Rocklin’s Destiny Community Center on August 5 at a “Backpack Giveaway”— complete with games, prizes, a barbecue and free haircuts—at Johnson-Springview Park. Without the backpacks, some of these children would have no school supplies. The giveaway is one of Destiny’s signature events, at the core of its “Love Our City” brand whose mission is Love our kids. Love our families. Love our schools. Love our country.

“If we can get the family healthy, we can impact the broader community,” says Marketing Director Michelle Coleman. “It moves from the person, to the family, to the community.” Recently, at the center’s coffee shop, Coleman and Community Development Director Scott Bryditzki shared Destiny’s story. The 64,000-square-foot space (formerly a Walmart) was strikingly remodeled to have a lean, industrial, almost whimsical interior.

Since opening in 2015 and breaking from its founder, Destiny Church, the nonreligious nonprofit has partnered with schools and the community to facilitate more than 300 events that serve the needs of families at every age, free of charge. Inside the center, kids and teens can hang out or get homework help in their own cool spaces, while caregivers can take classes— such as ESL, parenting and job training— and even work out in a small gym ($15 per month). Ashley Hoohuli, mother of three, has taken every parenting class. “What I’ve learned has made our household happier,” she says. “Now I don’t do everything for my kids. I allow them to learn while they have me as a safety net.” The center also houses the Destiny Performing Arts Academy, which will hold auditions next month for Beauty and the Beast, to be performed on the center’s stage. As a sampling of its community outreach, the center adopts Title I schools and refurbishes them and nearby homes. In June, at its Celebrate America event to honor the country and military, they gave two small houses to homeless vets. Later this year, at their annual holiday Bike and Toy Giveaway at the Golden 1 Center, Kings players will help hand out brand new bicycles (each one customized based on information teachers provide and built by volunteers from 38 organizations) and helmets to 4,000 kids from Title I schools. Coleman is quick to point out Emilia Meyer that event volunteers are always needed. “We want to empower organizations to step up,” Coleman says.“Everything we do is to give hope to families.” One element of that hope, says Bryditzki, is the concept of “pay it forward…what we’re trying to accomplish, and succeeding [in doing so], is to transform families to want to give back to their community. e all know the farmhouse look: lots of reclaimed wood accented by airy white spaces and décor that seems to have walked out of an old-timey barn and into a contemporary kitchen. Though the style is

beautiful, it’s saturated the interior design market with its seemingly uniform look. Instead of the predicatable design—full of minimalist home accessories, reclaimed wood tables and barn doors—we breathed new life into this client's home by creating the look with an organic spin and a focus on fresh coloration and lively accents. Read on to learn how you can accomplish the same clean and contemporary style in your own space.

USE A FRESH FOCAL COLOR AS YOUR FOUNDATION

What we’ve found that’s often missing in the quintessential farmhouse look is color. Because Instagram and other social media platforms focus on the beauty of simplicity, like blank white walls and minimalist style, homes have begun to reflect that over-simplified look. And while it may be pretty on Pinterest, it lacks dimension and authenticity in real life. To overcome this barrier, we used a bright, fresh green as our foundational color and made sure to use variations of it throughout the home. In the living room, it’s found on throw pillows, greenery and window coverings, and in the nursery it’s

PAIR NEUTRAL COLORS WITH LOTS OF TEXTURE

If you’re against any color darker than eggshell, that’s totally fine, too. Another great way to add dimension without committing to a color is through texture. In the kitchen, we opted for beautiful white handmade subway tile and crisp white cabinetry. To warm up the space, we topped the counters with rope place settings, a rustic cutting board and metallic accents like bowls and silverware. The same addition of texture can be seen in the guest spaces, too. Textured linen window coverings, reclaimed wooden chairs and bedding with a little bit of pattern help balance the neutral coloration of the space with cozy and dynamic design elements.

MAKE YOUR FAVORITE SPACES LIVABLE

Our last hint is this: While you want your favorite spaces—like the master bedroom and living room—to be beautiful, you also want them to be livable. When designing around a farmhouse look, choose materials, colors and details that will allow for the dog to jump on the couch, the kids to run through the hallways, or the wine to spill on the rug. The most important quality to design is how a space makes you feel, and if it’s too fussy and buttoned-up, you won’t want to wind down. Consider using performance fabrics on Kerrie L. rooked Lane Brewing Company’s brewmaster Teresa Pstuty blinds us with science on the regular; she holds a bachelor of science in chemistry and spent 10 years in the biotech industry as a field service engineer before entering the world of beer, and her science background still informs her brewing technique today. “In the brewery, I take an analytical approach,” says Pstuty. “I measure everything as the brew day progresses so I Teresa Pstuty ny pa m can maintain consistency.” And for Pstuty, Co ewing Crooked Lane Br way, Auburn, 530consistency is key. “I believe the more gh Hi 536 Grass Valley ing.com rew eb lan measurements you can take in the ed ok 878-5232, cro process, the better you will be able to identify problems if they occur,” she says. The scientific approach is working—Crooked Lane recently won Best of Show and a double gold medal at the El Dorado County Fair, a silver medal for their Gnarly Goat and gold for the Wobblor Doppelbock at the California State Fair, and silver and bronze medals at the LA International Beer Competition. Not bad for opening just last August! It helps that Crooked Lane is a family (and friends) affair; Pstuty’s husband, Adrian, is co-owner, neighbor Paul Schilling handles the marketing, and close friend Kirt Braun handles sales. For Pstuty, establishing their roots in the Auburn community and providing a gathering space for locals feels just as much like success as the well-deserved accolades. As for the elephant in the room—the notion of Pstuty being a female brewmaster in a male-dominated industry—the reality is more positive (and inclusive). Says Pstuty, “Women are such a big part of the craft brewery explosion. We’ve become a big part of the customer base, and central players in the success of the industry. As co-owner, I had an advantage to assume the position of brewmaster, but I’ve been delighted at the way I’ve been received and the great treatment I’ve had in just about all my interactions in the beer community at large. Craft beer is no longer the domain of bearded men.”

he Monk’s Cellar is relatively new to Downtown Roseville, having opened in 2014, but Andy Klein is no newcomer. His first brewing job was with Sacramento Brewing Company back in 1995, he graduated the American Brewers Guild in 1996, and has worked in and around the Greater Sacramento region ever since. But he always dreamed of opening his own brewery “with a European/ Belgian vibe.” The fact that Klein, along with business partners Paul Gould and Tom Rotelli, was finally Andy Klein able to realize his dream in his hometown has The Monk’s Cella made it all the more special. “I grew up in Roseville, r 240 Vernon Stree t, Roseville, not far from where we 916-786-6665, mo nkscellar.com opened The Monk’s Cellar. I remember as a child when Downtown Roseville was the place to be. We went down there for shopping, to watch movies, go out to dinner, etc. It’s nice to be a part of the renaissance and redevelopment of downtown.” Experience lends weight to The Monk’s Cellar’s success. Between Klein and co-brewmaster Peter York there’s a combined 40 years of experience (and according to Klein, between the two of them they’ve won well over 100 awards)—and that may be what ultimately makes their beer stand out from the crowd. “I’m fortunate to have Peter York as a cobrewmaster (quite honestly he does most of the work)... we both subscribe to making a variety of classic-style beers that are balanced and that everyone can enjoy. Many breweries are focusing on the latest craze in the industry; we believe in making great beer that has stood the test of hundreds of years from around the world.” Amen to that!

Loomis Basin Brewing is a family affair—wholly family-owned and operated with Kenny and his father, Jim, sharing the brewmaster roles together. didn’t take long for Kenny to catch the beer-making bug and went on to learn the ropes at Bulldog Brewing in Fresno, followed by several years at San Diego Brewing Company. In 2010, the Gowan family took the plunge together and opened Loomis Basin Brewing. Says Kenny, “The brewery is owned by both my mother and father and my wife, Linda. We’ve opened and consulted on quite a few other breweries and restaurants. Time felt right, and we felt we had enough experience under our belt that we might have a shot pulling this little venture off.” Seven years on, it’s well and truly pulled off, as they’ve won numerous awards at the California State Fair including gold this year for their Saint Patty’s Day Brown. But that’s not why they do it. Says Kenny, “To be honest, competitions aren’t number one on our list. We don’t brew beers for awards; we brew them for people and the smiles that come after drinking it.”

arco Cappelli has been a winemaker since 1987, and his life story is as vibrant as the wines he produces. The son of Italian-born parents, Cappelli grew up in Monterey and Carmel. After some casual college mead-making led to an introductory wine class at UC Davis, he caught the winemaking Marco Cappelli bug the following year and worked a harvest at Miraflores Winer Napa’s Louis Martini Winery. Recalls Cappelli, y 2120 Four Springs Trail, Placerville, “The experience convinced me that making wine 530-647-8505, mi rafloreswinery.co would be my life’s work.” m After obtaining a degree in fermentation science at UC Davis, he spent 20 months in Italy at Chianti Classico and France at Sauternes, before returning to California where he came under the mentorship of the “dean of American winemakers,” the renowned André Tchelistcheff. “André was my mentor and not only guided me through those formative early years but also shaped my overall view of wine and the industry—something I’m still grateful for many years later,” he says. One of Cappelli’s earliest realizations became one of the most long-lasting. Says Cappelli, “It took me many years to understand how modest the winemaker’s role really is in making fine wine. The most important part of the process is ensuring that the vineyards are well-maintained and the fruit is picked at the right maturity. All we really do in the winery is preserve the fruit in the form of wine—the basic quality and character of the wine is already established before the grapes arrive at the winery. I am reminded of this every vintage.” Cappelli has been with Miraflores since 2014, after 17 years at Napa Valley’s Swanson Vineyards, and his wealth of experience has not lessened the humility with which he approaches winemaking. “There’s nothing especially different or innovative about the way I make wine; in fact, I probably use fewer ‘tricks of the trade’ than most winemakers. Miraflores has a remarkable location and a unique terroir; we try to put less of ourselves in the wine and make more of an effort to showcase the natural character of the fruit.”

rennan Holmes and Mike Suflita form the brewing team at Out of Bounds Brewing, and they agree on most things. For example, they both prefer the title “head brewer” to “brewmaster.” More importantly, they play well together. Says Suflita, “We have a unique situation at Out of Bounds because we have two head brewers. My relationship with Brennan is 100-percent collaborative and not at all competitive. It’s great to have a person to bounce ideas off, and we’ve each had a hand in every beer we’ve brewed here.” Both are graduates of the master brewers program at UC Davis; Suflita has been with Out of Bounds going a it and Mike Sufl es m ol H an n n on three years, and Holmes came re B ewing Company aboard in 2015. When asked what Out of Bounds Br , Suite 100, Rocklin, 916-259Road 4480 Yankee Hill makes their technique stand out, m .co sbrewing 1511, outofbound Holmes says, “Our willingness to experiment with almost anything and not having dogmatic ideas about what beer and beer styles should or should not be.” Suflita elaborates: “We use a lot of unique ingredients—fruits, spices, wood, etc. A lot of our beers have something extra added. We do traditional styles, too, but we’re always pushing the limits of our creativity.” That creative room feeds their enthusiasm for the job and for creating exciting new products. Suflita continues, “Brennan and I have a lot of creative freedom at our brewery. My favorite part is coming up with new beer ideas and seeing them through to fruition.” Fruition has meant quite a few awards for Out of Bounds (California State Fair and the U.S. Open Beer Championship to name a few), and after the success of their first barrel-aged offering, both Holmes and Suflita look forward to expanding their offerings with the opening of a full restaurant, Out of Bounds Brewing Folsom Craft Kitchen and Biergarten, (anticipated for this coming fall). To paraphrase a quote by former ESPN announcer Dan Patrick: “You can’t stop Out of Bounds Brewery, you can only hope to contain them.”

t Wise Villa Winery, it’s not just the wines that are special, it’s the way they’re produced, and who is producing them. Employee Kevin Luther advanced from assistant winemaker to co-winemaker in 2016 and together with Dr. Grover Lee their rare talents and enthusiasm combine to create the exceptional wines that made them the winner of the prestigious Golden State Winery of the Year Award at the California State Fair in 2015. We established a really unique style, drawing from the best of the old French and European philosophies of winemaking—crisp acidity, lower alcohol, balanced flavors—and combined them with a lot of experimental techniques to accentuate a bolder flavor that truly expressed our land and style here.” Those experimental techniques are key, says Dr. Lee. “Our winemaking technique is extremely different than how wine is made by most winemakers. I would say that processes applied would probably fall within the one percent of how wine is made worldwide.” For example, the meticulous sorting of grapes and colder temperature of their no-crush fermentation process in the winery means that, according to Dr. Lee, their “tannins are much softer, without that bitter bite at the end from using this detailed clean sorting and cold fermentation, plus other labor-intensive procedures.” Luther believes in the process just as much as Lee. “… Bottom line, the core of our quality comes from focusing on purity and quality at every step.” It’s a labor of love for the two winemakers. Where do they find inspiration in such hard work? Easy, says Luther. “Seeing people enjoying the wine. They might not know the hard work, soul-ache, and passion that went into the glass, but that doesn’t matter. Seeing their happy, tipsy faces and laughter is the point. They don’t have to know the flavors, the subtleties, the artistry...It’s about sharing that moment, that joy, with friends, with food, with a good life. [Knowing that] what we do results in something that enriches the lives of people makes me go home with a smile on my face.”

I

f you ask Zack Frasher what makes him stand out as a brewmaster, he’s quick to answer. “Developing and making NE-style IPAs [that are] popular in Northern California.” Moonraker’s cloudy IPAs have been making big amber-colored waves since their 2016 opening, but Frasher’s still humble about his role in all of it, even down to the title. “I usually don’t like the term ‘master.’ At age 33, I don’t really consider myself a master of anything!” Frasher started homebrewing in 2008 and worked at The Brewmeister before joining up with Moonraker. could live in Sun City Lincoln Hills, maybe not just yet, but certainly when my friends and I are retired and looking for more than just a casual golf game to fill our days. Did you know they have a summer concert series and often host special events at their restaurant, like last month’s four-course Brewmaster’s Dinner? Food, beer, golf and live music? Count me in. Open to the public seven days a week, Meridians boasts a

beautiful facility that sits inside Orchard Creek Lodge and has two bars and a restaurant, the latter which features vaulted, woodbeam ceilings, stone columns, views onto the golf course and a stunning waterfall. I sat in the restaurant for lunch, so I could enjoy the water feature and bright sunshine. My server, Leah, recommended the wings as a starter, which I was inclined to do anyway…great minds, right? Cooked Buffalostyle, the unbreaded drumettes and flats were deep-fried and served alongside ranch dressing with the obligatory celery spears— resulting in plenty of crunch and just enough spicy sauce to warrant wet wipes (thank you, Leah, for your foresight). Next came a shrimp L o u i e s a l a d rep l e t e with everything I like on my Louie: tender bay shrimp, avocado, cucumbers, hard-boiled eggs and tomatoes on a Key Lime Tart bed of crisp lettuce, with the classic mayo-based dressing. Each flavor-packed forkful was full of crunch and creaminess, and left me feeling HOURS: 7 a.m.-3 p.m., 5-8 p.m. (Sundays); 7-10:30 a.m., satiated but not stuffed. 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m., 5-8 p.m. As an entrée, you can order salmon (Monday-Thursday); 7-10 a.m., 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m., 5-9 sliders, which make for a great “share” p.m. (Friday-Saturday) when you’re trying to lighten up lunch. Zest Kitchen // Brightly colored walls and brightly colored food—that’s how I like my dining experiences to be, and Zest Kitchen delivers

both. At this vegan restaurant, vibrant interiors pair nicely with creative offerings, fresh ingredients and a cheerful atmosphere. It seems like they have a loyal following among the vegan and non-vegan crowd alike, gauging by how many people I saw coming in to pick up orders or gather around multicolored tables. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, so I ordered the Quinoa Wrap. I chose to have mine in a spinach tortilla, and it came with garden vegetables that included bell peppers in a rainbow of colors, cucumbers, red onions, lettuce, avocado (extra), carrots, cilantro-lime quinoa and a “cheesy” chipotle sauce. This was no meager portion, mind you. The wrap had been stuffed to gigantic proportions and made for a very substantial and visually appealing meal. I’ve never enjoyed so many vegetables so much for so long (it took me a while to get through the entire thing)—and it was a welcome change. My accompanying drink also doubled up as dessert and breakfast the following morning. It was the Dark Velvet smoothie that had cacao powder, spinach, frozen bananas and

1/4 cup orange marmalade 1 tbsp. fresh lemon juice 2 tsp. whole-grain mustard 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 tsp. salt 2 large egg whites 2 tbsp. water 3/4 cup panko (Japanese breadcrumbs) 1/2 cup sweetened flaked coconut 2 tbsp. canola oil 1 1/2 lbs. large raw shrimp (about 24), peeled and deveined

Preheat the oven to 375°F. Combine the first 3 ingredients and 1/4 teaspoon of the cayenne pepper in a small bowl. Set aside until ready to serve.

Combine remaining 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, flour and salt in a large zip-top plastic bag. Whisk together the egg whites and 2 tablespoons water in a shallow dish. Combine the panko, coconut and oil in a separate shallow dish.

Place the shrimp in bag with flour mixture, and shake to coat well. Dip the shrimp in egg white mixture, and roll in coconut mixture.

Place a wire rack inside a large baking pan. Coat baking rack with cooking spray. Arrange the shrimp in a

A Heart for the Arts Creativity runs as rampant as the cacti around these parts, so for those with a heart for the arts, Palm Springs is a prime place to be. Mirage, an aptly named installation (on display through October 31) that sits high on the desert hills, is a ranch-style house made entirely of mirrors. Crafted by artist Doug Aitken, the literal fun house is particularly stunning at sunrise or sunset, when you can catch the sky’s sherbet-hued shades and surrounding environment reflecting off the architectural delight.

Hungry Hippos The Palm Springs restaurant scene is full of places to be seen, prime patios and enough Happy Hours to keep you smiling all weekend long. For breakfast and brunch-goers, there are plenty of cool-kid spots to sip mimosas (Cheeky’s and Workshop Kitchen + Bar, to name a few), but for a taste of local flair, head to under-the-radar Elmer’s Restaurant. The coffee is strong and bottomless, and the as-big-as-your-face German pancake is worth every sinful calorie. What’s more, the laid-back vibe means you can roll right out of bed and into the eatery (Trust me: Elmer won’t judge). When it comes to dinner, the posh without being pretentious EIGHT4NINE is worth the splurge. Sited in a 1950s building amid the fashionable Uptown Design District, the dazzling décor (think bright white accented by punches of electric pink) is tame in comparison to artfully presented plates that run the gamut from a Dungeness crab and sweet corn-bacon

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

Danielle Roe Events is a full-service event design and production house. From wedding and event conceptualization to the last dance, we specialize in creating a unique and memorable experience for you and your guests. We have a passion for curating exhilarating and timeless events through visionary design and an obsessively detailed dedication to the planning process.

Nor Cal SUP Fitness came from my 25-plus years as a strength coach and trainer. For someone to be successful in their fitness goals, they must change their mind-set about working out and realize that being active, at any level, is a gift. Fitness shouldn’t be limited to the gym or a diet plan. Getting outside and being active is a true lifestyle change, and the options are endless. Paddle boarding is one of those great options; it gives you core strength, balance, cardio and an amazing view. The best part is it’s fun and doesn’t feel like a boring gym workout.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer? My husband and I are both committed to giving back to our communities. We work hard to volunteer together with various nonprofits and have also helped to spearhead and grow an annual charity poker tournament to benefit HomeAid, a local nonprofit dedicated to providing shelter for the temporarily homeless. As part of my business model, I also dedicate time to do pro bono work for charitable organizations and offer a nonprofit rate when producing events for fund-raisers and galas.

Where do you go when the going gets tough? Church. My event schedule sometimes precludes me from getting to go as often as I’d like, but when I feel like I need a real reset, nothing gets me in the right frame of mind more than going to church with my husband.

What’s your hidden talent? I can speak Italian.

What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? The Place in Roseville is honestly the best Italian food I’ve ever had outside of my nonna’s kitchen or the little hole-in-the-wall I loved to eat at when I studied abroad in Rome. Go for the “Sunday gravy,” and stay for the zeppole!

What’s your favorite local business other than your own?

How are you involved with both the community and your customer? We recently launched Nor Cal SUP Groms, a youth SUP program that includes fitness, racing and respect for the community by teaching kids to unplug and reconnect with nature, which will ultimately help them become ambassadors for the planet. We also hosted a Paddle Splash Festival at Lake Natoma last month to help promote the fun of paddle boarding for the whole family; race proceeds helped fund the Groms program.

What’s your biggest job perk? Watching people’s faces light up when they get on the boards and see fitness from a whole new viewpoint.

What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? Mikuni. I was one of their first customers.

What’s your favorite local business other than your own? Beach Hut Deli—great food and vibe.

If you could be in any other profession, what would it be?

Sparrow 5—they have so many amazing treasures and trinkets.

A veterinarian. As a retired paramedic, I’ve always had a passion for medicine, and animals have a special place in my heart.

A Heart to Help the Homeless

I gave a homeless guy two bucks recently. He was older, with gray unkempt hair, oversized clothing, a week’s worth of stubble and no teeth. He saw the Starbucks cup in my hand and said in a rough but friendly voice, “Nice morning for a cup of coffee, isn’t it?” He had no idea the odds that were against him when he first approached me. For a long time, I’ve had a policy against giving homeless people any sort of help. I’d heard that it’s more compassionate; there are shelters and services where they can go for a meal, a cup of coffee and help. Giving money discourages that. But if I’m being honest? They make me uncomfortable. I wonder about their disposition, their Catch Tom on the Pat and Tom Morning mental condition, if they’re high on drugs Show on New or blotto on alcohol. know Dimitri and was simply passing him on the street, would I help if he needed it…? I don’t like my answer. I’m not naïve. I know some homeless are there because of poor or outright stupid choices in life. Some are criminals and cannot be trusted. But I also know that many are there through circumstances beyond their control: mental illness…physical disabilities…poverty… domestic violence. The list is long and sometimes complicated, and I don’t think it’s up to me to judge which is which. Not anymore. So yeah, I gave that homeless man two dollars, and maybe he got his coffee, or maybe I was duped. I don’t care. All I know is I’m going to try harder; I’m going to find a local shelter to support, because services are still the most important thing. But if I get hit up and have a spare buck? overcrossing. She wasn’t succeeding. As I sat across the street from her, in the air-conditioned cab of my truck on a hot June day, I watched her struggle to move even just a few feet. At one point, she turned her chair around and with her one leg began pushing herself backwards up the incline, about six inches at a time. Her face was visibly red. She was sweating. My light turned green and I thought, I should pull over and help her; park my truck, get out of my comfortable cab—and my comfort zone— and help her. She wasn’t pestering me for change; she obviously needed a hand. I even slowed as I passed her to get on the entrance ramp. But in an instant, all those usual thoughts flashed in my head: What if she doesn’t want help? What if she’s crazy? Or drunk? Or filthy? I kept driving. And I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since. How numb have I become to the troubles of others? How did I get so indifferent to the suffering of those I’m uncomfortable with? I talk a good game about compassion and empathy, but I flat-out failed a test that was literally right in front of me. My broadcast partner, Pat Still, has an 18-year-old son, Dimitri, who has autism. Pat’s worst nightmare has always been that somehow, someday, Dimitri falls through the cracks and ends up on the street. I would help Dimitri in an instant now, if he needed it. But if I didn’t
